The Great Whin Sill, the volcanic seam of rock that forms the Farne Islands, is also present on Lindisfarne. At the southern end, the dolorite dyke forms some spectacular sights, particularly at the island’s castle. very similar to Bamburgh, it is a natural fortress where the dolerite intrusion is about 65 metres wide and is what the castle is built on. The dyke disappears into the Ouse, perhaps as a result of faulting, but reappears in the dolerite ridge south of the island’s village. St Cuthbert’s Isle, where the saint built his chapel cell, is also formed from the dolerite. The east coast of the island is mainly a platform of sandstone, with the lower coastal cliffs having a covering of boulder clay. The north shore is a fossil hunter’s delight, because the extensive acres of limestone outcrop regularly produce unusual prehistoric fossils. Before the last Ice Age, Lindisfarne was just part of the mainland, but after the ice melted it became completely separated by a two-mile wide stretch of flat sand. Lindisfarne is almost three miles in length but is only 1,050 acres in extent. It contains, though, a real variety of geological and historical features.
