The Boston College Museum of Art US Map & Phone & Address
Devlin Hall, 140 Commonwealth Ave. Chestnut Hill; (617) 552-8587
This place is pretty impressive for a college art museum. The galleries have movable walls, allowing plenty of flexibility in displaying exhibits. The main gallery is two stories high, suitable for very large works. And the sophisticated security and climate-control systems allow the museum to show off rare and fragile pieces.
BC has been collecting art since the nineteenth century. Its strengths are in Gothic and Baroque tapestries, Italian paintings of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, American landscapes, and Japanese prints. Added to this are traveling exhibits like the recent Irish Watercolors and Drawings from the National Gallery of Ireland. And don’t miss the Micro Gallery, an interactive computer system that displays information and images of works in the permanent collection. The museum organizes public lectures, symposia, workshops, film series, and gallery tours. All programs are free of charge. During the academic year, hours are 11 am. to 4 p.m Mondays through Fridays, and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. In the summer, BCMA is open 11 am. to 3 pm. Mondays through Fridays.
