Where else can you hear half a dozen different acts for a suggested donation of $3? Right in Harvard Square, across from the movie theater, the Nameless has been a folkie institution for years. It’s a showcase for rising singers, songwriters, and poets, held at 8 P.M. on Saturday nights, about twice a month or so. The setting is lively and informal, with refreshments available at one end and the evening’s performers hawking their tapes at the other. Cambridge at its most soulful.

Speaking of which, you can get all the free folk music you want almost any time the weather’s nice in Harvard Square. The warmer months, of course, are particularly rich for these budding Bonnie Raitts. The best-known locations are in front of the Harvard Coop, Au Bon Pain, Gren-del’s Restaurant and the comer of Brattle and Eliot Streets. You can while away a whole afternoon or evening by wandering from one to the next, for just a buck in each guitar case. Oh come on, they need it; it’s still cheap.
