Recently rechristened (some still know it as the Newton Arts Center), this handsome brownstone former church continues on as a temple to the arts, both viewed and practiced. Classes, taught by talented professionals, take place all year long, for both adults and children. There is a wide range of endeavors from dance, acting, and comedy to sculpture, yoga, and even Survival Skills for Artists. Fees vary by course; annual memberships include a 10% discount.
There’s a lot more here than books! The main branch in Copley Square has movies, lectures, and art exhibits, all free and open to everyone. Many of the outer branches have similar offerings.

In addition, the NAC houses two art galleries, both of which present four shows per year (always running in tandem). Most feature artists from the Boston area; many are curated by local experts as well, who compete for the opportunity.
Gallery admission is usually free, though certain shows may charge a couple of dollars. Hours are generally Wednesdays through Fridays from 11 A.M. to 5 P.M. and weekends from 1-5. Exhibits do not run at all times of the year, so call ahead to confirm the current schedule.
