Short historical context

Due to its strategic position, this Romanian region has had an extremely eventful history. Dobrudja, a region which includes two counties, Constanta and Tulcea, was a territory inhabited ever since the oldest of times. During the 6th-4th centuries BC, the Black Sea coast was colonized by Greeks. On the territory of present-day Dobrudja the colonies Histria, Callatis and Tomis were founded. The Greek colonies were organized following the model of the Greek polis. In Antiquity, the historical province Dobrudja was known under the name of Scythia Minor (Roman name).

Tourist resorts

Mamaia. a resort situated at a 3 km distance from Constanta, lies on the Black Sea coast and on the shores of the Siutghiol salt lake. This is an elegant tourist resort with four and five-star hotels, a large number of pools, sport fields, entertainment activity units and discos. Here you can also find a theatre, a dolphin entertainment center and a planetarium.

Eforie Sud was the first resort in Dobrudja to own a treatment spa. It is still renowned for the treatments it offers, the resort position between Techirgiol Lake and the Black Sea make possible the use of the sun and sea for treatment, as well as natural mud. Furthermore, the resort has a spectacular promenade, 2 km long, which offers an impressive view to tourists.

Costinesti is situated at a 28 km distance from Constanta and it is known as a resort for youths. The locality has a large touristic complex for youths, built following a modem design. In addition to the appeal of historical vestiges, represented by the Roman-Byzantine Basilica from the 5th and 6th centuries, the Mosque built in 1590 or the Archaeology Museum, tourists can visit the hippodrome situated at a 3 km distance from the town and can take horse-riding lessons in the same area. Also situated in the Southern part of the coast, there are the resorts: Neptun, Olimp, Saturn and Venus, localities well-known for their extremely developed touristic units.
