The identity of the Romanian people was formed based on the solid grounds of religion. Christianity, preached by the apostle Andrew at the beginning of the first millennium, on the territory of present-day Dobrudja (former Moesia, Roman province), was and still is the main religion of this country’s inhabitants. Many of the monasteries and churches situated on Romanian territory have the attributes of fortified strongholds, because they represented, through the centuries, shelters as well as important defense fortresses.
The tourist who reaches nowadays Romania discovers an unprecedented cultural region. The churches and monasteries situated in towns as well as in areas nearby towns preserve a tradition which comes down to these places from the first century of Christianity. Most of the monasteries offer accommodations to tourists who want to live the unique experience of a life planned according to Orthodox monastic rules. If the upwards expansion of cathedrals in European Western civilization has become an etalon for medieval civilization, the accomplishments of Romanian religious architecture are related to developing the art of details and of fascinating behavioral tradition. Mural paintings, made by anonymous artists at the time when the famous Sistine Chapel was painted by Michelangelo in Vatican City, still retain their radiance, and visitors are constantly bewildered by the art of these anonymous authors from the 15th century. Some of the churches and monasteries in Romania are listen in the UNESCO World Heritage.
