True to its moniker, the Gem is a treasure. The historic theater screened its first feature film, Can This Be Dixie with Jane Withers, in 1936. A fire destroyed the theater in 1942 but it was rebuilt and opened again in 1948 with an ornate lobby and balcony seats. It claims to be the oldest single-screen movie theater in operation in the United States and shows first-run films nightly.

There is no major-league baseball team in North Carolina, but the minor-league action is top-notch. The Kannapolis Intimidators are the single-A farm team for the Chicago White Sox and part of the Class-A South Atlantic League (SAL), which has been operating for 105 years. The team plays 140 games between April and September; half of them are played at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in
Kannapolis. The 4,700-seat stadium was built in 1995 and has a host of options for fans from reservation-only luxury suites to general-admission bleacher seating.
