The Park and Kalemgdan Castle where the Victory Statue Belgrade’s landmark can be visited. The commercial streets of Knez Mihailova and Terazije. The Skadarlija, the famous Bohemian ‘Latin Quarter’ renowned for its gastronomy. The Barjak Mosque (17th century) the only remaining mosque out of 100 that existed in the 19th century. The Military Museum, appropriately next to the castle, displays the history of Yugoslavia. The Josip-Broz-Tito Memorial, the former ‘House of Flowers’ where the Marshall often stayed during his last years.

McAllister screamed at the top of his voice – he thrashed like a landed fish and we could barely control him. One of the ABs punched him in the stomach to slow him down then butted him in the face. McAllister’s nose burst open: he spat blood on the AB’s shirt. The AB butted him again. It took all our combined strength to restrain him. We filled up at Maracaibo and headed northeast, across the Atlantic for Europe. It was a slow voyage and we were very low in the water, right down to the load-line marks. We were buffeted by bad weather the whole way. I had hoped to be home for Christmas but the prospect looked bleak. Every morning, Starling and I went out on deck to take the tank temperatures – 30 tanks in all, three abreast from fore to aft.
