From New York we sailed south to Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela. The weather turned warmer as we went south at a steady 15 knots. When we reached the Florida coast, the order came round at breakfast that whites’ would be the uniform of the day. Starling and I ventured into the officers’ bar that evening in our white shirts with gleaming cadet epaulettes rigid on our shoulders, our skinny white legs sticking out from our baggy white shorts and long white socks pulled up to the knee, with spotless white canvas shoes on our feet. We took in the custom fit of the rest of the officers gathered at the bar: shirts hanging outside shorts that were shorter than ours, short white socks, casual shoes. We felt new and oafish. We stood out. Rolo laughed: Look at this pair for Christ’s sake Sparks said: Easy does it lads. Put those whites through a double wash and get the starch out. I’m surprised you can walk.
