The home for small artists serves gourmet food (‚6-8) to complement creative drink options (‚2-4). Sip a cup of coffee and people watch-not only are entrees among the best in the city, they’re also among the most expensive (‚16-22). Open daily noon-2;30pm and 6:30-10:30pm. O ES Marche, Neuhauser Str. between Karlspl. and Marienpl. The top floor offers cafeteria-style food; downstairs, chefs prepare every food imaginable, including great vegetarian selections. You’ll get a food card that will be stamped for each item taken; pay at the end. Bottom floor open llam-lOpm; top floor 8am-llpm, until 10pm in off-season. Cafe HagConfiserie Retenhafen, Residenzstr. 25-26, across from the Residenz. Specializes in a delectable array of cakes and sweets (‚2-4). Serves breakfast (‚4-8) and entrees (‚5-8). Open M-F 8:45am-7pm, Sa 8am-6pm.

Shoya, Orlandostr. 5, across from the Hofbrauhaus. The most reasonable Japanese restaurant in town. Fill up on rice dishes (‚7-9), teriyaki (‚4-8), and sushi (‚4-10) as you Saki-bomb to Japanese music. Open daily 10:30am-midnight.

ELSEWHERE

Schelling Salon, Schellingstr. 54 (272 07 88). Bavarian Knodel and billiards since 1872. Rack up at the same tables where Lenin, Rilke, and Hitler once played. Breakfast ‚3-5. Traditional German entrees ‚4-11. A free billiard museum displays a 200-year-old Polish noble’s table and the history of pool back to the pharaohs. Museum open Su night. Restaurant open Su-M and Th-Sa 6:30am-lam.

Schwimmkrabbe, Ickstattstr. 13. Ul or 2 to Frauenhoferstr. This family-run Turkish restaurant is popular with locals. Appetizers ‚4-9. Meals ‚8-18. Open daily 5pm-lam. News Bar, Amalienstr. 55 (28 17 87), at the corner of Schellingstr. Trendy cafe teeming with students. Large portions at reasonable prices. Breakfast menu ‚3-9. A wide assortment of salads, sandwiches, or pasta (‚5-9). Open daily 7:30am-2am.

VEGETARIAN RESTAURANTS

Buxs, Frauenstr. 9, on the southern edge of the Viktualienmarkt on the corner of Frauen-str. This upscale cafe provides tasty, artful pastas, salads, soups, and bread in a peaceful indooroutdoor setting. Self-serve everything, with a weight-based charge at the end. Open M-F llam-6:45pm, Sa llam-3pm.

Gollier, Gollierstr. 83. U4 to Heimeranpl. Take a left onto Ridlerstr. and walk 2 blocks north; turn right onto Astallerstr. and then left on Gollierstr. Serves delicious pizzas, casseroles, and crepes (‚6-11). Lunch buffet Tu-F ll:30am-2:30pm (‚5.50). Open Tu-F ll:30am-3pm and 5-llpm, Sa 5-llpm, Su lOam-llpm.

Cafe Ignaz, Georgenstr. 67. U2 to Josephspl. then take Adelheidstr. 1 block north and turn right on Georgenstr. Low-key, earth-friendly cafe. Dinners (pasta, pizza, crepes, quiche, and stir-fry) ‚5-9. Lunch buffet ‚6. Open M-F 8am-10pm, Sa-Su 9am-10pm.
