Low-level, everyday rebelliousness was the most common form of slave resistance. Hamburg Map Tourist Attractions One common tactic was stealing from the master; slaves did not consider this immoral, since their own coerced labor had produced the master’s wealth. Arson and destruction of farm implements was also frequent. So many buildings and farm tools were destroyed that slaveholders began using brick instead of wood for construction and developed the steel negro hoe, which was much more difficult to break than a traditional wooden hoe. Other forms of daily resistance included working slowly, feigning illness or pregnancy, arson, self-injury, poisoning, and even killing oneself or one’s children. The men, women, and children who performed these acts did not take the more drastic step of running away or rebelling openly, but they nevertheless found other ways of resisting slavery and asserting their humanity.
