As you begin your walk down East Street, note on Essen/D¼sseldorf Subway Map the left-hand side the splendid Georgian redbrick George House, dating back to 1805, and Essen/D¼sseldorf Subway Map further along the street are some excellent halftimbered buildings, one housing a gunsmith’s and one containing the Tudor Rose Antiques Centre. Denman’s is described by Pevsner as probably the best half-timbered house in Petworth. You pass a cobbled courtyard leading to Jevington Court, and soon reach three more gems: The Leads, a mid-eighteenth-century brick building, Stringers Hall with its bay windows and dating back to the middle of the seventeenth century, and Daintrey House, a huge Georgian mansion, albeit containing some Elizabethan features, and boasting magnificent gardens. Pevsner describes it as ‘the most ambitious house in Petworth’. Turn right at the end of East Street into New Street, now heading downhill; note the row of houses to the left with a different coloured door on each one. Look out for the splendidly old-fashioned menswear shop a little further down.
