BEST AREAS FOR WILDERNESS CAMPING

YELLOW RIVER STATE FOREST

Yellow River State Forest is located in the northeast corner of Iowa. It’s a hilly, mostly-forested area of hardwoods with pine and other conifers, open meadows, and some beautiful creeks. There are also nice views from limestone bluffs. Wildlife includes deer and wild turkey.

Activities: A 20-mile Backpack Trail winds through one unit of the state forest, and there are three shorter hiking trails. Difficulty ranges from easy to moderate, with an occasional steep stretch. Horseback riding is allowed on some trails. Fishing is available as well.

Camping Regulations: Camping and campfires are restricted to nine designated areas along the Backpack Trail, and there are also campsites for horseback riders. Backpackers must sign in at a registration booth before starting out. No fee is required.
