ACCOMMODATIONS

The Neustadt is home to a number of hostels that give revelers proximity to clubs and bars and have late check-out times. Quieter hostels and pricier hotels can be found around the Altstadt, closer to the sights. Reservations are a must anywhere.

Hostel Mondpalast, Louisenstr. 77 (563 40 50). With a guestbook full of rave reviews, this hostel has all a backpacker could desire: Good prices, comfortable beds, a large kitchen, a social dining room, and a bar. Sheets 1.50. Internet 3.50 per hr. Reception 24hr. Dorms 13.50-16; singles 29, with bath 39; doubles 3750. Pension Raskolnikoff, Bbhmische Str. 34 (804 57 06). This 6-room pension is squeezed into the same building as the restaurant and gallery of the same name. The distinctly relaxed bohemian atmosphere is a perfect escape from the hostel scene. Singles 31; doubles 41; 8 for each extra person.

Hostel “Louise 20,” Louisenstr. 20 ( 889 48 94). Climb the ladder to one of the 20 beds in the dorm attic (10) in Dresden’s newest hostel. Sheets 2.50. 5-bed room 15; 3-4 bed room 16; singles 26; doubles 37. O

Lollis Homestay, Seitenstr. 2A (799 30 25). From Neustadt station turn left on Dr.-Friedrich-Wolf-Str.; follow it to Bischofsweg and turn left under the tracks. Go right on Rudolf-Leonardstr. and left through the park. Cozy as a German WG (shared student flat). Breakfast 3. Sheets 2. Free laundry. Dorms 13; singles 25; doubles 34.

Hostel Die Boofe, Hechtstr. 10 (801 33 61). From the Neustadt, take a left and walk parallel to the tracks on Dammweg. Go left on Bischofsweg and right on Hechtstr. Funky hostel has a restaurant downstairs with specials for guests. Sheets 2.75. Reception 6pm-midnight. Dorms 14.50; singles 25; doubles 40, with shower 48.

Jugendgastehaus Dresden (HI), Maternistr. 22 (49 26 20). From the Hauptbahnhof turn left on Ammonstr. to Rosen Str. Turn right, then take a left onto Maternistr. Come here when everything else is booked-they have 400 beds. Breakfast included. 24hr. reception. Check-in after 4pm. Check-out 9:30am. Dorms 20; singles 8 extra.

It’s difficult to find anything in the Altstadt not targeting tourists; the cheapest eats are at the ImbiJS stands along Prager Strafie and around Postplatz. The Neus-tadt area between Albertplatz and Alaunplatz spawns a new bar every few weeks and is home to most of Dresden’s quirky, ethnic, and student-friendly restaurants.

Planwirtschaft, Louisenstr. 20. Attracts political Reds and Greens with neo-German cuisine made with ingredients fresh from local farms. Inventive soups, fresh salads (3.50-6.50), and entrees from stuffed eggplant to fresh lake fish (7-10). Breakfast buffet until 4pm. Open Su-Th 9am-midnight, F-Sa 9am-lam. 18 Cafe Aha, Kreuzstr. 7. Across the street from Kreuzkirche. Promotes fair trade by introducing food from a different devloping country each month. Often exotic and always delicious. Entrees 3.50-8.40. Open daily lOam-midnight.

El Perro Borracho, Alaunstr. 70. Flowing Spanish wines, Sekt, sangria, and tasty tapas make happy Dresdeners. Entrees 6-8. Buffet breakfast 10am-3pm on weekends (8). Open M-F ll:30am-2am, Sa-Su 10am-3am.

Raskolnikoff, Bohmische Str. 34. A Dostoevskian haunt in a pre-war brownstone. Savory fare from all four corners of the globe (3-14.50). Open daily 10am-2am.
