Starr Book Shop US Map & Phone & Address 4
• 29 Plympton St, Cambridge; (617) 547-6864
As you may have begun to notice, Cambridge is renowned for having one of the highest concentrations of bookstores per square mile in the country. Starr shares space in the narrow, oddly-shaped Harvard Lampoon building, just off Mt. Auburn Street. Don’t worry the store is much more serious about books than its upstairs neighbors.
Most hardcovers are around half of their original prices, unless they are very old or worn. Generally, the quality here is quite good, and the selection is large. Mine saw a like-new copy of Norman Mailer’s Tough Guys Don’t Dance, reduced from $16.95 to $8.50. More diverse are the non-fiction subjects, with a lot to browse through in sociology, psychology, law and medicine, history, art and travel. Open Mondays through Wednesdays from 10 am. to 6 P.M. Thursdays through Saturdays til 9, and Sundays from 12 noon to 6 p.m.
Meanwhile, the other scholarly used bookshops in the area are McIntyre & Moore Booksellers at 8 Mt Auburn Street, Cambridge, (617) 491-0662 and Pangloss Bookshop at 65 Mt. Auburn Street, Cambridge, (617) 354-4003.
