Please don’t think Old Faithful is the only thing to see, though, at the main Complex, because, quite honestly, I found the short five minute walk up to the hill on the other side of the river to be where most of the cool sights remain.

One very important point to remember is that the trip boats visit this particular site in their droves during the summer, especially at weekends, and they don’t always acknowledge a diver’s A’ flags and surface marker buoys, so extra vigilance should be maintained. Any problems from their skippers or dangerous encounters should be reported to the DTI and the Marine Police on the Tyne. Another important thing to remember is that, on spring tides, there are very large curling waves on the surface and strong currents caused by the concentration of water being forced around Longstone end. At low tide, the south end of Longstone forms a nice quiet horseshoe-shaped lagoon called Brada and unless there is an easterly swell, it is an ideal site both for the beginner and the experienced diver. There is little or no current inside the bay and it is usually home to a colony of grey seals, which are quite happy to follow you around and allow you to get very close to them. Many divers spend their free time between dives just snorkelling with the seals. The further into the bay you go, the shallower and less interesting the flora and fauna becomes. The whole area is covered in a dense kelp forest, but there are some nice deep gullies and crevices to poke around in, near to the eastern and seaward end. The eastern and southern perimeters of Brada have lovely rocky cliff faces to 15 and 25 metres, where there is a profusion of marine life, but the tide flows fairly strongly on the surface out here. The trip boats cut very close to the edge of the underwater cliff face to let their passengers see grey seals and you cannot always hear their engines underwater, so extra care should be taken when surfacing from the deeper water.
