1,699 acres. Afton is a small state park which is located next to the St. Croix River in southeast Minnesota. Some of the terrain here is rugged, with bluffs, rock outcrops, and ravines along the river. There are forests of oak, birch, and aspen, and a few grassy areas. Deer and fox are among the wildlife.
Activities: The park has 18 miles of hiking trails, and these are suitable for cross-country skiing in the winter. Five miles of trails are open to horses, and four miles to bikes. Canoeing is available on the river. Hunting is prohibited.
Camping Regulations: Camping is limited to a large backpack camping area, three-quarters of a mile from a parking lot, with 24 widely dispersed sites. There’s also a canoe campsite along the river. Campers must register at the park office.
