Swimming south for about 200 metres brings you into 25 metres plus and onto a sand and stone seabed. Here, if you are lucky, it is possible to collect a few queen scallops (Chlamys opercularis) and great scallops (Pecten maximus) for the pot. Swim for a further 100 metres and you will find a whole scallop dredge, complete with its steel wire ropes stretching out across the seabed in an east to west direction. This is not a recommended dive site, because there are very strong currents and really nothing to dive on. It appears to be a reef but is in fact just a sloping bank in both directions which almost dries on a spring tide. The bottom is covered in short seaweed on small rocks, stones and sand. This is the Gun Rock wrecksite where there used to be as many as 26 cannons lying scattered around. Unfortunately, people with their own peculiar motives have removed many of them over the years, spoiling the site for everyone else. The wreck has never been a protected site because it was not deemed to be historically important enough, yet lots of encrusted artefacts, such as sword hilts, cannon balls, bar shot, musket balls and at least two brass swivel guns have been found here. A couple of years ago, some university divers recovered a small tin box with an inscribed lid.
