The lively town of Bor&s in southern Sweden, between Gothenburg and Jonkoping, straddles the River Vi-ska. Founded in 1622, it has a busy textile industry and several large mail order businesses.
SIGHTS. In the Market Square stands the imposing Town Hall (1 908-1 0), with a carillon. In front of it is the attractive Sjuharadsbrunn, a fountain by Nils Sjogren (1 941), and to the N the Caroli Kyrka (1 660, restored 1 941), with a fine interior. The House of Culture (1975) contains the Museum of Art, the Municipal Theatre and a library. In the Ramnapark is the open-air Boras Museum, with old peasants’ houses and a 1 6th c. church.
In Boras Park are the interesting Zoo and recreation facilities. Adjoining is the Alideberg swimming pool, with a restaurant.
SURROUNDINGS. 8 km (5 miles) NE, on the Ulricehamn road (No. 40), the commandingly situated church of Bramhult, has 18th c. paintings. 25 km (1 5 miles) SE, on the shores of Lake Asund, is Torpa Castle, containing a fine Renaissance Knights’ Hall and a Baroque chapel of 1 699.
