When one table here sported a sign proclaiming “Assorted merchandise,” Mine had to laugh. It’s all assorted, and you really never know what you’ll find. You can bet it will be a bargain, though usually due to defects or damaged packaging.
Most of these goods are liquidations from department stores, toy shops, and supermarkets, all at deep discounts. Two-drawer filing cabinets with minor scratches were seen for $12-$15; dented cans of Coke were 250. An aerobic step-unit, in its original packaging, was $10, minus the workout video which would have kept the price at $30. A selection of clothing included Bugle Boy jeans ($9) and Italian Club cotton plaid skirts ($4), some with a loose thread or two.
All of these flaws are clearly pointed out, often with a touch of humor: A stuffed “Tookie the Talking Toucan” toy was marked, “Doesn’t talk.” Cheapo Depot offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, no questions asked. Keep your receipt.
In some cases, a different pricing philosophy holds true: Asked how an apparently undamaged full-sized futon and frame set could be had for only $100, a clerk responded, “If we charged more, they’d just sit here, like at all the other stores.” Pull into the Depot from 12-8 p.m. Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 8 P.M. Fridays and Saturdays, and 12-5 p.m. Sundays.
