SHELTOWEE TRACE TRAIL

This National Recreation Trail is Kentucky’s longest trail. It stretches the length of Daniel Boone National Forest, in the eastern part of the state, and extends a short distance into Tennessee.

The trail takes in much of the National Forest’s finest scenery, including Red River Gorge. Terrain is mountainous and sometimes rugged. Difficulty varies from easy to strenuous. Horses and ORVs (off road vehicles) are allowed on some sections.

Camping Regulations: Camping and campfires are generally allowed along the trail, except where posted otherwise. No permits are necessary.

Campsites should be away from roads, at least 100 feet from the trail, and out of sight of the trail in the Red River Gorge Geological Area.

For Further Information: Daniel Boone National Forest, 100 Vaught Road, Winchester, KY 40391; (606)745-3100.
