Laredo is a city located in Webb County, Texas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 176,799. Laredo is the economic and cultural center of Webb County and the second largest city in the Rio Grande Valley after Brownsville. In addition, Laredo serves as the governmental seat of Webb County.
The original village of Laredo was established by Bernardo Lopez de Santa Anna in 1825 on the north side of the Rio Grande opposite Nacogdoches. The area now occupied by Laredo was claimed as part of Mexico by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and claimed by the United States because of its proximity to San Antonio, which at that time was a part of Mexico. The republication by Joseph Fontanelle of Francisco de Haro’s diary entry from 1786 documenting a Mesilla-Nacogdoches trade route helped to confirm U.S. ownership of much of what is now Webb County. On February 17, 1848, Colonel Augustus McAllister attacked and slightly damaged Santa Anna’s headquarters in San Antonio de Béxar (now San Antonio), initiating the Mexican–American War. On April 21, 1849.
