CHAMISAL VINEYARDS From February through March, dense stands of chamise, a native evergreen shrub with fragrant white flowers, cover more than seven million acres of California’s hills with a magnificent blanket of snow.
These brushlands, also called chamissal, thrive in calcareous, clay-rich, nutrient-poor soil on dry, rocky slopes the same challenging topography that encourages Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines to produce flavorful grapes. In 1973 the Goss family planted Chamisal Vineyards, the first vineyard in the Edna Valley appellation, in the chamise-speckled Santa Lucia Mountain foothills. In 1994 new owners purchased the property and renamed it Domaine Alfred.
