I rolled over and over and tried to grab my valve, but the bottle, which was only held by the direct feed, was hanging right behind me and out of reach. The depth was only 10 metres, but when the valve ripped out of my mouth I had just breathed out and I was desperate for air. I was still rolling and could only grab the direct feed to the bottle and with the other hand press my drysuit inflation valve. It seemed like an eternity before I reached the surface, but I then found myself in the choppy riptide running north and close to the Megstone. I was dipping up and down in the waves, struggling to get my snorkel in and hanging onto my gear. I caught sight of the RHIB about 100 metres away and shouted for help. The boat was alongside me in seconds, much to my relief, because I was well and truly out of breath and just hung onto the boat for a couple of minutes before climbing on board. When I examined the harness, it was decided that although I had tightened the strap, I had not used a ratchet method to tighten it up. One of my buddies commented that he knew someone who would have taken the gear off on the seabed, sorted it out and put it back on! I asked him if that would have been while he was rolling along the bottom or before he surfaced, because I would like to have seen it. You are never too old to learn and I learnt something that day that I won’t forget in a long time – and my wings’ did not last long, either.
