RECOMMENDED LOCATIONS
MOUNT MITCHELL STATE PARK
Located within Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina, this state park surrounds 6,684-foot Mount Mitchell, highest mountain in the eastern United States. There are magnificent views from the top.
The forest includes hardwood trees along with fir and spruce. Some trees have been badly damaged by acid rain. White-tailed deer, black bear, and bobcat are among the wildlife found in the area.
Activities: Hiking and backpacking are available on 18 miles of trails, with many more trails available on National Forest lands around the park.
Camping Regulations: Camping in the park is restricted to one campground, but trail shelters for backpackers are located just outside park boundaries, in Pisgah National Forest.
