STONE MOUNTAIN STATE PARK
Stone Mountain State Park is in the eastern Blue Ridge Mountains of northwest North Carolina. This is an area of rugged terrain which includes 2,305-foot Stone Mountain, and some rock outcrops.
Also here are the East Prong Roaring River, 200-foot Stone Mountain Falls, and several creeks. The forest consists of mixed hardwoods and hemlock, with rhododendron and mountain laurel. Among the wildlife are white-tailed deer, bear, bobcat, and fox.
Activities: Hiking and backpacking are possible on a number of trails. Rock climbing is allowed on Stone Mountain, but only when conditions are dry. Fishing is permitted in the creeks and river.
Camping Regulations: Camping is restricted to several designated backpack campsites. A permit is required, and must be obtained from the park office. A fee is charged for each night.
