HENRY F. SHAFFNER HOUSE

150 S. Marshall St. 336/777-0052, www.shaffnerhouse.com

Henry Fries Shaffner, co-founder of Wachovia Loan and Trust, now part of Wells Fargo, was the original resident of the home. When the home was built in 1909, it featured a combination of traditional elements and modern amenities like fireplaces in each of the rooms as well as central heating, gas fixtures, and electric wiring. Shaffner died in 1941; his wife moved but retained ownership of the house, renting it to medical students. It also served as a clubhouse for the American Legion and a boardinghouse before it was abandoned. The home was purchased in 1990 and underwent extensive restorations before being opened as a bed-and-breakfast in 1992. Each of the nine rooms ($115-280 s or d) is named for a person or place of local historic importance. The Piedmont Suite is a worthwhile splurge. At 900 square feet, the room occupies the entire top floor and is decked out with a king-sized bed, separate living area, wet bar, whirlpool tub, and a shower built for two.

It began operating as an inn in 1984 with 41 rooms ($95-186 s or d). An additional 30 rooms were added in 1990 in an adjacent building that was built in 1880. The buildings are situated around an expansive outdoor patio. The rooms are simple but comfortable and, like the common areas, retain their original charm with exposed brick walls and wooden beams.

History for Riyadh Map
Continuing away from the South Downs Way on the grassy path Riyadh Map , you aim just to the left of an area of woodland and proceed through a large open Riyadh Map field keeping the woods to your right. The path aims for the right-hand corner of the field – ignore paths leading into the wood to the right – and arrives at a kissing gate. Pass through the gate, and, ignoring the path leading hard right from it, bear more gently right to follow a wide track heading just east of south. Shortly you reach a crossroads of paths. Turn right and follow the track towards the road, but having passed through another kissing gate, don’t go forward to the road; instead, turn left beyond the kissing gate along a path that goes parallel with the road, eventually arriving at the road itself. Cross over the road and turn left along a signed path running parallel with the road on its west side, arriving at a T-junction with a drive.
