Ruth’s House US Map & Phone & Address
• 14 Stevens St, Haverhill; (508)521-5575
Sometimes fate and inaccurate maps take you on unexpected turns, which is how Mine happened to discover Ruth’s cheerfully hand-painted yellow and red signs. Inside, even more surprising, is a 10,000-square foot shopping mall of thrift items, at the kind of rock-bottom prices only possible when everything is obtained inexpensively in this case, all donated.

An interdenominational store where gospel music rings out from an old cassette deck, Ruth’s offers a staggering number of goods for less than a buck. Housewares for 500, books for a quarter, and clothes for $l-$2, including racks of women’s clothes that would take days to fully explore, although London Fog jackets and Anne Klein blouses did leap out quickly. Decent furniture and appliances, too.
You’ll also feel good about yourself, since Ruth’s House works with organizations including the Red Cross and Social Services to give money and goods to those in need. A friendly atmosphere, including a liv-ing-roomish lounge area near the entrance, is just another surprise at this factory-building store. Give yourself time to stroll 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. Tuesdays through Fridays and 9 A.M. to 2 P.M. Saturdays.
