Over the last 200 years no fewer than ten sailing vessels have come to grief on the rocky outcrop of Greenhill Rocks, most of which, I should imagine, would have been driven in by heavy weather. On 17 October 1865, the Whitby brig Medora was lost, along with her crew of twelve. In 1922, a quarter of a mile north of Greenhill Rocks, the steam trawler Saint Evelyn Joyce ran aground while on fire and became a total wreck. Her boiler and engine can still be seen, half- buried, on a low spring tide and it is rumoured that her prop shaft, complete with brass propeller, are still buried under the sand. Half a mile further north from Greenhill Rocks is the long, high and very prominent reef known as the Islestone. It reaches well out to sea, drying to 2.1 metres on the lowest astronomical tide, at the point where the Bamburgh sands sweep back towards the Castle. The Islestone is a formidable barrier against the tidal flow, causing the water to funnel out seawards and creating a lot of surface disturbance. The change of direction of the sea here has caused a shallow sand bank to develop on the north side of the Islestone. The Islestone has very little kelp growing on it compared with most other reefs, just long stringy weed, probably being too shallow for anything more.
