The city center is an odd polygon formed by Victoria Station to the north, Piccadilly Station to the east, the canals to the south, and the River Irwell to the west. The many byways can be tricky to navigate, but the area is fairly compact, and Mancunians are generally helpful.

Tourist Information Centre: Manchester Visitor Centre, Town Hall Extension, Lloyd St. (234 3157, 24hr. info (0891) 715 533). Staff books accommodations (£2.50 plus 10% deposit) and can sometimes get special rates. Free literature includes the Manchester Pocket Guide, the Greater Manchester Network Map, and What’s On, which lists local events. Open M-Sa 10am-5pm, Su 10:30am-4:30pm.
