Behind the uninspiring exterior of Stemmerman’s lies one of the nicest inns in Wilmington. Tucked inside the narrow VbnKampen Building, a historic commercial building that was constructed in 1886, the inn underwent a complete renovation but retained the charm of the exposed brick, high ceilings, stained glass, and beams in each of the seven guest rooms. The rooms ($99-129 d) feel like small
apartments and offer modern amenities like kitchenettes, spa-like bathrooms, and wireless Internet. The building has a common deck with great views of the Cape Fear River.

Turn right and follow the road uphill, swinging left to continue onto the college, with the massive college chapel immediately to your right. The chapel is visible for miles, and being right in the shade of it will make you feel very small indeed.
