SHOPPING. Copenhagen’s main shopping area is the long pedestrian precinct known as Stroget, with its numerous side streets. Here are found not only large department stores but numerous small shops and boutiques offering a wide variety of wares. Particularly tempting buys are porcelain (Kongelige Porzellanfabrik, Bing & Grondahl), furniture and furnishings (Den Permanente display of Danish design, Town Hall Square; Ilium Bolighus), furs (Birger Christensen, A. C. Bang), silver (Georg Jensen), pewter (Just Andersen) and knitwear. When goods are despatched to addresses outside Denmark (make sure that they are insured!) the Danish value-added tax (MOMS) is deducted.

Art auctions: Arne Bruun Rasmussen, Bredgade 33. Numerous antique shops in the Latin quarter around the University and in Nyhavn. Flea-market on Saturday mornings in Israels Plads.

Copenhagen, capital of the kingdom of Denmark, lies on the E side of the island of Zealand, on the shores ofthe (Dresund. Denmark’s intellectual and cultural hub, it combines Scandinavian elegance with European joie de vivre. It is a city pulsating with life, particularly in the summer, and it draws visitors not only to see particular sights and features of interest but also to enjoy its own very distinctive atmosphere.

In addition to being the seat of the government and the residence of the monarch, Copenhagen is an important commercial, business and industrial city. Its port, once of major importance, has now been outstripped by Gothenburg and Hamburg. Its airport at Kastrup, however, plays a central role in air traffic between Scandinavia and other European and overseas countries.

Visitors to Copenhagen will enjoy the opportunity it offers of seeing the sights and doing their shopping within a relatively small area. In central Copenhagen it is best to do without a car and see the city on foot. But this pedestrian sightseeing should be supplemented by longer trips into the modern and fashionable

The Chinese Tower, Tivoli suburbs of the city and into the beautiful surrounding country, which can be easily reached with the help of the suburban railway (S-tog, operating from 5 a.m. to half an hour after midnight).
