At Legten a road goes off on the left to the interesting Renaissance castle of Rosen holm (1 6th c.). 1 km (j mile) before Ronde a minor road on the left leads to Thorsager, with the only round church in Jutland (dating in part from c. 1200).
The road to Ebeltoft branches off A1 5 just before Ronde. To the right of this road, on a peninsula reaching out into Kale Bay, are the ruins of Kale Castle (destroyed in the 17th c.), in which Gustavus Vasa was held prisoner in 1518. Ahead is an attractive view ofthe Mols peninsula.
Ebeltoft (pop. 12,000; hotels: Mokskroen, 50 Hvide Hus, 130 Lyngsbask, 40 Ebeltoft, 144 youth hostel; several camp sites) is a charming little country town with a 16th c. Town Hall (now a museum) and the FarvergSrd, an old dyer’s workshop. In the harbour is a 19th c. frigate, the Jylland.
SE of Arhus, in the Samse Belt, is the island of Samso (area 114sq. km (44 sq. miles), pop. 5200). Best way to travel Scandinavia From the harbour of Kolby Kis (Hotel Fasrgekroen, 20 b.) there are ferry services to and from Arhus and Kalundborg. The Manor-house of Brattingsborg is set in a park.
Ballen, a fishing village on the E coast, Best way to travel Scandinavia has a yacht harbour and beautiful beaches. 5 km (3 miles) W is Brundby, with a post windmill more than 300 years old.
Nordby (pop. 320) is an attractive old-world village. To the N aretheVore,by Bakker hills, part of which is a nature reserve.
Tranebjerg (pop. 660; Flinchs Hotel, 30 b.), the chief place on the island, lies roughly half-way between the E and W coasts. Best way to travel Scandinavia Massive 14th c. church; Samse Museum, a farmhouse of 1800 with a collection of antiquities.
