Situated at Puerto Rico’s northeastern part, El Yunque National Rainforest is the only tropical rainforest system in the USA. Though it is small in size at only 28,000 acres, the rainforest is ripe with biodiversity, breath-taking scenery and is the perfect host for a wide range of outdoor activities. El Yunque is culturally significant to the Puerto Ricans. It means the Anvil due to its flat peak and is believed to be where the Taino-Indian god Yuquiyu lives. Home to lush greenery, rivers, hiking trails and waterfalls, El Yunque is the perfect destination if you’re looking for outdoor adventures. There are numerous hiking trails of varying difficulties.
One of the most popular is the La Mina Trail which leads to the famous La Mina Falls. You may opt to go for a swim when you reach the falls or just bask at the tropical vibe and the amazing view. You may also want to book canyoning tours, go ziplining or rock climbing in El Yunque National Rainforest. Camping is also allowed in certain areas but you need to contact the administration beforehand. While there, you might chance an encounter with some animal species that are endemic in the rainforest alone including pygmy anoles and coqui tree frogs. El Yunque is also line with souvenir shops, food stands, restaurants and other establishments to make your stay even more comfortable and enjoyable. El Yunque National Rainforest is open from 7:30am to 6pm daily.
