299 Harvard St, Brookline; (617) 738-5635

The venerable Matt Garrett’s is a popular lunch, dinner, and late-evening meeting place. Its menu is one of those everything under the sun types Mexican, Italian, Jewish, Chinese you name it.

The vast list of appetizers includes heaping helpings of Buffalo wings ($4.45/$5.95) and a vegetarian platter of fresh-cut veggies, pita bread, hummus, and herbed cheese ($6.95). Fingers and Rings for T\vo, at $7.95, is a huge order served in an edible tortilla bowl. These are not the cheapest prices, but you get a lot!

A sampling of the culinary choices at Matt Garrett’s: Mexican pizza ($3.95/$5.95) with spicy beef, olives, and Monterey jack; stir-fry chicken Oriental ($9.95); teriyaki steak tips ($9.95); pasta primavera ($7.95); also, half-pound burgers with fries, from $5.45, and even five kinds of yuppie-topped pizzas ($7-$8). Portions are large, and most entrees come with sides of rice or potato (the fries are excellent), some with salads.

Garrett’s also has weekday luncheon specials for $5.25, with choices like schrod, stir-fry, or pasta. And best of all are the early-bird dinner specials, when full meals are just $6.95. Grab them Mondays-Fridays from 3:30 to 5:30. Sunday brunch is a big deal here, too.

Matt Garrett’s also has big desserts and sweet specialty drinks from the bar. The atmosphere is lively, and this is one of the few places that serves food until 1 a.m. every day. It’s pretty much the late-night place in Brookline.
