The Rev. Mr Mackenzie mentioned above was a devoted Christian, being the former pastor of the Independent Church in Nile Street, Glasgow and later Tutor of the city’s Theological Seminary. At dawn the Pegasus’ sister ship Martello, en route from the opposite direction, arrived at the scene to find only six people still alive; the mate, the engineer, the ship’s carpenter, one seaman and two passengers. In an account of what happened, it appears that the passengers and crew were responsible for their own misfortune when they panicked, upsetting and swamping the lifeboats which were their only means of escape. Herring fishermen, returning to Holy Island after a night’s fishing, assisted in the rescue and, after picking up everybody they could find, both dead and alive, the Martello continued on her journey to Leith. The disaster brought national interest and it was reported in the Illustrated London News on 19 August 1843: As proof of the morbid feelings of the British public, it may be mentioned that the Holy Island, scene of the disastrous wreck of the Pegasus, is daily visited by throngs of fashionably dressed persons, who were attracted thither by the most idle and most unveiling curiosity. One day last week, two open carriages, filled with ladies and gentlemen, and drivers in bright red livery forming most dashing and distinguishing equipages, visited the Island. They were said to be a party of bathers from Spittal. They had a large bugle or French horn with them, by means of which they awoke to the echoes of the dreary sands in their progress and astonished the inhabitants on the shore. It is said that the party formed a deputation from the Royal Humane Society, but the rumour has not been authenticated.
