Ahhh, baseball as it was meant to be. Forget about whiny, overpaid major-leaguers. The guys in this league want to be in the majors, so they still have the fire that makes sports fun. And, tickets are way cheap. Box seats are $5.50, and $4.50 for kids and seniors. General admission tickets, which you can usually walk up to the window and buy right before the game, are just $4, and $3 for kids and seniors. McCoy Stadium, home of the PawSox, is smaller than Fenway so there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Pawtucket is about an hour’s drive from Boston.

There are plenty of gullies, with a fair amount of marine life in and around them, such as brittle stars, urchins, anemones and crabs. Although the tidal streams are very strong, this a nice, pleasant dive. Farne Sound is the name for the rather shallow stretch of water between the Megstone and Farne Island, running west to east, with the majority of it being only about 12-15 metres deep. The bottom consists mostly of sand, broken shell, stone and small, weed-covered rocks. Currents are strong in both directions and the best way is to drift dive it, using a surface marker buoy. This is not a very interesting area to dive, but you never know what there might be lying around on the seabed, as quite a number of old ships have disappeared without trace or run aground and drifted off into the Sound before sinking. A couple of years ago, I was reliably informed by a local Seahouses diver of a very interesting bit of information regarding the chance discovery of what is referred to as the Holy Island Wrecksite’. It is rumoured to be lying somewhere between the Swedman Rocks, Farne Island and the mainland, where the maximum depth is only 17 metres on the lowest astronomical tide. During the reign of Henry VIII, there was an open clash between the Crown and the Catholic Church resulting in the dissolution of the monasteries. The King was also at war with the Scots and he assumed control of Lindisfarne in 1543 to garrison his military.
