We didn’t have a cabin so we slumped into torpor in the forward lounge. I telephoned my mother from Harwich railway station the next morning and said I would be home later in the day. My father was off flying somewhere and my mother couldn’t drive so I finished the journey by walking the last mile from the bus station to home, alternately carrying and dragging my heavy sea kit. I would have five days at home before starting college in early January. I came home three months older, I felt three years wiser. That evening I sat in the front room of my parent’s house in front of the fire, the trappings of Christmas strung around me, eating crumpets and watching television and filtering the things I felt I could tell them. I often caught my parents and my brother Peter watching me. I felt. as if I now belonged somewhere else. January: bleak and grim on an early Sunday morning at Reading station.
