DALE EARNHARDT: RACING’S NATIVE SON

Few racecar drivers are as well known-or as well loved-as Dale Earnhardt. Earnhardt was born in Kannapolis in 1951 and grew up on the racetrack watching his father, Ralph Earnhardt, race around the short track. He began his professional racing career in 1975, when he drove the #8 Dodge Charger at the World 600 at City Motor Speedway. He finished in 22nd place. Earnhardt is best known for driving the #3 car in NASCAR’s top division, the Winston Cup Series (now the Sprint Cup Series). He won 76 races and was first across the finish line of the Daytona 500 in 1998. He is tied for the most all-time wins with fellow NASCAR driver Richard Petty. He was nicknamed Ironhead, The Man in Black, and the Intimidator and was often criticized for his aggressive driving style. Earnhardt had four children: Kerry, Kelly, Dale Jr. and Taylor. Dale Jr. followed in his father’s footsteps and is a fan favorite. Earnhardt died during a last lap crash at the Daytona 500 in 2001. His legend lives on at Dale Earnhardt Incorporated (DEI), the race shop-turnedmuseum that is filled with memorabilia from his life. The Dale Earnhardt Foundation was established in 2002 to ”continue the Legend through charitable programs that honor his commitment to children, education, and wildlife preservation.
