The Motorhome Adventure: Travelling the West Yorkshire Dales

While classic British sitcom The Last of the Summer Wine may be long gone, its scenic backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales remains an iconic slice of British landscape. With swathes of rolling valleys and spectacular moors, Yorkshire is an idyllic location that is ideal for British adventure seekers who are keen to travel by motorhome.

As a motorhome enthusiast myself, I have been fortunate enough to traverse to soaring peaks and rolling greenlands of West Yorkshire. My trip also took in delights such as Leeds, Otley and Holmfirth, introducing me to a peaceful and altogether more peaceful way of life.

3 Hotspots in the West of Yorkshire

With this in mind, here are three of the highlights from my West Yorkshire trip. Hopefully they can inspire a motorhome adventure of your own!

1. Visit the regenerated city of Leeds

If you have never been to the historic city of Leeds, there has never been a better time to break your duck. This region is currently benefiting from a multi-million pound regeneration, with a new city square, main shopping centre and numerous commercial and residential developments add colour and vibrancy to the landscape. Modern-day Leeds is also a cultural phenomenon that has played host to the Tour de France as recently as 2014, alongside the popular Leeds Festival and other leading events.

I would also recommend a trip to the Royal Armouries Museum, particularly if you have an interest in arms throughout history.

2. Check out the Rural Landscape of Bradford

Bradford is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the UK, and it is also one that has a deceptively beautiful and often overlooked rural landscape. This surprising city is also home to a number of fascinating sides and landmarks, including the popular National Media Museum and the wonderful Alhambra Theatre.

My own particular favourite is the historic Saltaire village which is on the outskirts of Bradford, which includes a traditional textile mill and the United Reformed Church. This village has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and is well worth a visit from individuals and families alike.

3. Trail the Banks of the Pennines

In terms of other rural hotspots, the iconic Pennines is one that defines the West Yorkshire landscape. A leisurely walk across the banks of the Pennines takes in the edges of Yorkshire and the neighbouring Lancashire, including wonderfully quaint towns such as Halifax, Huddersfield, Hebden Bridge and the aforementioned Holmfirth.

Each of these towns have their own unique appeal and sense of history, from stone clad market towns, arching valleys and those that are surrounded by bewildering greenery. Wherever your go on your West Yorkshire adventure, you are sure to find a location and route to suit your tastes!
