The Dundee Courier stated: The Northern Yacht was a slightly-built river steamer, very long in her shape and by no means fitted for contending with heavy seas. For some time she has plied between Dundee and Leith but was never reckoned a secure boat. We have several times made the voyage on board her, but with some alarm, arising from strange methods adopted in managing her boilers. It is not many weeks since an article appeared in the Morning Gazette condemning the Northern Yacht as a means of transportation, because machinery went wrong and she was obliged to trust in her sails. The Northern Yacht passenger paddle steamer was completed at Glasgow in 1835 by Messrs R. Barclay for Mr Robert Barclay who was the registered owner. She was put to Lloyd’s for classification but Lloyd’s refused to grade the ship, reporting that she was more a river boat and not suitable for open sea voyages. The steamer was subsequently used over the next couple of years for making return trips from Glasgow down the Clyde to Ayr; in April 1838 the hull was eventually surveyed at Newcastle. The most famous ship to be wrecked on the Goldstone and definitely the wreck with the biggest loss of life was the paddle steamer Pegasus on Wednesday, 19 July 1843. She left Leith with 50 passengers aboard on her regular trip to Hull and, at approximately 0029 hrs on a calm, clear night, struck the rock.
