The History of Bandol

Located on the Mediterranean Sea, Bandol is a small town known for its white sand beaches and crystal clear water. It is also known for its seafood, particularly theBandol-Ajaccio caviar.

The history of Bandol can be traced back to the time of the Phoenicians. The town was founded by settlers from Carthage in 711 BC and was known as Baetulo. The town grew rapidly due to its advantageous location and became an important trading center between the Mediterranean world and North Africa.

In 150 BC, Bandol came under Roman rule and prospered as a port due to its strategic location. It became an important naval base and served as the capital of the province of Provence until it was sacked by the Visigoths in 410 AD.

The Moors captured Bandol in 853 AD and it remained under Islamic rule until it was captured by the French in 1768. The town underwent a period of rapid development during the early part of the 19th century as a result of its strategic location and became an important tourist destination.
