BEST AREAS FOR WILDERNESS CAMPING

MOUNT WASHINGTON STATE FOREST

4,169 acres. Mount Washington State Forest is located in the south Taconic Mountains, in the southwest corner of Massachusetts, adjacent to New York’s Taconic State Park. Some of the terrain in this mountainous area is steep and rugged.

Highest point is 2,453-foot Mount Frissell. There are great views available from mountain-tops, with high open meadows, rock outcroppings, and streams with waterfalls at lower elevations. Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, black bear, and fox.

Activities: In the forest are about 30 miles of trails for backpacking and hiking, including the scenic 16-mile South Taconic Trail. Limited Horseback riding is available, as is cross-country skiing on some trails during winter. Fishing is possible along the streams, and hunting is permitted in season.

Camping Regulations: Backpack camping is allowed at one designated area with a number of :ampsites, located along a trail in the middle of :he forest. A small fee is required for camping each light. There’s also a cabin which is open to backpackers.
